Obituary

Helen Fiero passed away gently and peacefully on December 6, 2020 at the age of 102.
Born in New York in 1918 to her Greek immigrant parents, Chris and Marguerite, Helen spent her public school years between her Staten Island home and her father’s florist shop on Madison Avenue & 92nd Street. A 1940 graduate of Hunter College in Physiology, she spent her early adult years at the Guggenheim Dental Clinic as a researcher and hygienist. Helen also found time to run her father’s florist business after his death in 1945. Never wanting to be idle, she had a second career as a teacher’s aide in the North Babylon, NY school district until she retired in 1980. She also kept busy with the Deer Park Community Presbyterian Church women’s circle, water color painting, and visiting with her “sisters,” Lucy and Bianca.
Helen found love and a true partner in William Pierson Fiero III. Helen and Bill were married in 1954, moved to North Babylon in 1958 and stayed together until Bill’s death in 1998. When they weren’t raising a family, going to Broadway plays, and watching their beloved New York Yankees, Helen and Bill traveled the world together.
During her later years, Helen moved to Rhode Island to live near her Colbert family. Even after turning age 101, she was still strong-willed, quick-witted, funny, loving and caring.
Helen is survived by her children, Doug Fiero and Sue Colbert, her son-in-law Jim Colbert, her daughter-in-law Andrea Fiero, and five grandchildren Samantha, Alyssa, Madeline, Abigail and Benjamin. We were so fortunate to have her as our Mom and our Nana for as long as we did.
In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to Feeding America at www.feedingamerica.org or your local food bank in Helen’s memory.
