Joseph "Jay" T. Pinney, "The Atlantic Cowboy," age 71, passed away on Saturday, October 31, 2020. Born in Providence, he was a son of Ruth Mahoney and the late Richard Pinney, and the step-son of Thomas Mahoney, Sr.
He was the sole proprietor of Mahoney's clothing store located in Block Island for many years; he was a true entrepreneur. He enjoyed adventures, writing, gardening, sharing stories, and spending time with others.
In the words of his granddaughter, Bella, she described Jay "As a wonderful bowl of fruit. Zesty and fun like a lemon with conversations as intoxicating as grapes. Your original ideas are like a bite into a crisp apple for the mind, exploding with flavor. You are sweet as a plump blueberry in the spring and vibrant as the inside of a kiwi. What I love most about you is how original you are. It is inspiring to hear your stories about gymnastics and the bars, business, and your inventions. Conversations I have with you are so mind opening. Just the way you live and enjoy life to its fullest makes me see how exciting life can be when you take its opportunities."
Jay was the father of Nicole Barone Lawless; grandfather of Isabella Lawless, Luciana Lawless, and Sofia Lawless; brother of Sean Mahoney, Thomas Mahoney, and Kim Greenburg. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be private at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to Make-A-Wish, 20 Hemingway Drive, East Providence, RI 02915, will be appreciated.
