Russell L. Mayhew, 74, passed away surrounded by his loving family, Friday, June 14, 2019. He was the beloved husband of Carol A. (Butler) Mayhew. Born in Berks County, PA, he was a son of the late Rudolph A. and Helen K. (Aulenbach) Mayhew. Mr. Mayhew was a computer scientist for 50 years retiring in 2015. He started his career with IBM, then worked at the University of Toronto for 5 years, the Fireman’s Fund in California for 5 years, the American Arabian Oil Company in Saudi Arabia for 20 years. Upon his return to the US in 1998, he worked for the MBTA in Boston, MA, until his retirement in 2015. Russell lived in Providence for 20 years before moving to Harrisville in 2016.
Russell was the loving father of Ian Mayhew and his wife Julie of Mapleville and Alison Mayhew of Ellicott City, MD. He was the proud Papa of grandchildren Sam, Sophie, and Piper. Russell is also survived by a brother and sister, Mark and Susan Mayhew, both of Averill Park, NY.
A graduate of Rensselaer College in Troy, NY, Russell was a deep thinker and an aficionado of every kind of puzzle, from the New York Times Sunday crossword to his grandchildren’s jigsaw puzzles. He was a consummate problem-solver and had a unique ability to see solutions to the trickiest of problems. One of his favorite expressions was, “What do we need and what do we have?” Another favorite expression was, “Be prepared,” a result of his many years as a scout master. Russell had a great love for animals and provided a “forever home” to many strays over the years. An avid traveler with a sense of adventure, Russell once rode with Carol Ann across Canada on a motorcycle. He visited the Great Pyramids of Giza, sailed through the Panama Canal, snorkeled in the Red Sea, and enjoyed several trans-Atlantic crossings on the QEII.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Service, Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 11am in the TUCKER-QUINN Funeral Chapel, 643 Putnam Ave., (Rt.44), Greenville. Burial will be private.
