William L. Gallagher, Sr., 94, passed away Friday, December 25, 2020. He was the husband of the late Dorothy E. (Whitman) Gallagher for 62 years before her passing in 2018. He was born in Providence, a son of the late Edward F. and Mary V. (Hogan) Gallagher. Mr. Gallagher was a cable slicer for Verizon for 32 years before retiring in 1988. After retiring he became a bus monitor for 18 years for the Town of Smithfield School Department. He coached many years with the Town of Smithfield Little League and Basketball League Association. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, the Celtics and the New England Patriots. He enjoyed golfing and sports memorabilia collecting. He also played basketball for the St. Patrick’s School in Providence.
He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War, receiving the Purple Heart, Distinguish Unit Citation and the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars.
He is survived by his son, William L. Gallagher, Jr. of Greenville; 2 daughters, Patricia Lombardo and her husband Frank of Johnston and Colleen Jacobs and her husband Alan of East Greenwich. He was the grandfather of Alexis Desloge, Colin Jacobs, Frank Lombardo and Victoria Lombardo; great-grandfather of Landon Lombardo, Liella Lombardo and William Desloge. He was the brother of the late Marie Kenny, Marjorie Dickerson, Theresa Quinn, Edward Gallagher and Charles Gallagher. “He also loved his wife and family.”
Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville, Thursday, December 31, 2020 at 9:30am. Face masks and social distancing will be observed at the Mass.
Burial with Military Honors in Highland Memorial Park Cemetery, Johnston will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148 will be appreciated.
